Photoshop Workshop

When working in photoshop you are working with bitmap graphics. Each image is made from pixels, the number of pixels defines the resolution/ the quality. This is usually measured in pixels per inch , dpi.

The most important things about photoshop are:

  • You must already know your output as images become pixelated (bad quality) when they are enlarged.
  • You must also have the right pixels set e.g. 72 or 300
  • You must set the colour mode to the correct setting i.e. CYMK or RGB

RGB screen, web, ect, 72 dpi
The colour is made out of light; red, green and blue

A photograph is also RGB as a photograph captures light.

CMYK print paper, ect, 300 dpi
The colour is made out of ink or toner; cyan, magenta, yellow and black (key)

A lot of colours in RGB mode can't be reproduced in CMYK, but they can from CMYK to RGB, this is because light can make more colours than ink/ toner.

Working in a non destructive way :

How to tell what colour mode the image is ...

The colours in this image can't be reproduced by a printer. So you need to consider this.

Destructive

CMYK mode
Non-destructive

Check proof colours

uncheck proof colours to go back to RGB, you can have it with proof but it will go back to RGB

Gamut is the colour range
out of gamut, out the colour range you are using
gamut warning highlights the colours out of gamut range

 this is CYMK gamut warning

add an adjustment layer as this is non destructive,

to get rid of the grey which is the area wont print, you could try uding levels tool in the adjustment layer

Or the brightness and contrast, however you can see its not working

Or you can completely change the colour by using the hue and saturation, you can see that there are now no grey areas so all colours are in gamut.

Layer mask all white this means everything is being masked,

to add in the windows
set foreground colour to black

work with a soft edged brush, so you don't have a harsh edge.
[ ] decrease and increase the size of the brush,
the layers mask now have the shape where you have removed the layers mask

Finished image

In some photographs it is best to leave the subject matter in shadow rather than the sky as all the details are still there and you can add the highlights, but you can't do this with the sky.
Using the quick selection tool you can select the statue

Then on a new adjustment layer only the statue will be selected, then you can edit the levels and add in the highlights/mid-tones. As you can see the statue is there now.
You can see on the layers mask layer only the statue are is selected, this is shown in white.

Panorama

6/12/2012

This loads all the images onto one document instead of all seperate documents.

Select one image in the folder and  Command A to select all the images in the folder.

Smart object, combines all the images into one layer, double click on it to open up all the layers.

This gets rid of all the moving images in all the images and so this just leaves the static buildings and erases the people.
Photos were set to be taken every 30 or so seconds, and it was on a tripod.

however you can see there are some shadows of people underneath the Bean and the sky has blurred.

so to do this select an image where you like the sky, open it as a seperate document in Photoshop. Then select all the image Command A , then copy it Command C then go to the original image and paste it Command V. Then using the quick selection tool select all the sky then go to select inverse and then edit cut, this will delete all the buildings leaving the sky.

Contact sheet
File, contact sheet 2, then choose the folder, you have to set the paper size yourself,

This is A4 portrait

You can also set columns and rows, and we are going to leave the file names on so you know which picture is which.

You would send things as a PDF as you can open it without the software. So eveyone can open it.

2 File types

Lossy (-Web) JPEG smaller file loses some of its information, but opens faster
or Lossless (-Print format) Tiff keeps all its original quality

 Save images as a Tiff
 Then open Adobe Acrobat Pro
Add the files, select the largest file size, and then combine files

Save the images as a PDF, and then you open this in preview to print

You need to select Two-sided to make it double sided

Then make sure you scale your image to 100%
