The Shining Poster Development

I started with a typographic like style, I like the infamous quote of the film and working with the point size and tracking of the words/ letters could create a piece that reflected Jack's insanity.

I then began playing around with the works and I started to turn them around ect.

This made me think of the maze in the film, I thought that it might look really effective if the words fit the maze. And so I got a picture of the maze and started to place the words in the maze. For each word I had to change the tracking and the point size so that it would fit in the maze.

I felt that this looked a bit chaotic and there was no sense in the order of the words,

And so I tried to involve the work of the maze.

But the green looked to dark it didn't stand out and so I added the red, which is a colour used a lot in The Shining.

I worked with different patterns leading around the words,

I felt that it didn't lead enough and so I thought back to the actual scene , and int the snow scene both characters leave footprints, and so I thought that involving footprints would create a chase.

I had big footprints which would represent jack and smaller ones which represented danny

But again this looked chaotic...

Making the footprints had made me think about Danny and the fact that he has 'the shining' makes him a key character and he is not regularly shown on the front cover, I also thought more into the shining and the physical form of the shining is Danny's finger.

I also thought about how I could show the shining and I made lines coming out of the fingertip.

I also added blood like the famous elevator scene pours out, I felt that this scene is the first thing the shining really shows Danny.

I added the title 'The Shining' in a font called fjallaone. It reminded me of type that is on films of that era, plus it worked well with the length of the shards of light I had drawn.

I then worked on placing in that Stanley Kubrick had directed the film, I also thought about the wording.

I found that this suited the poster the smaller font Avenir Next Condensed, which almost looks like a lighter version of fjallaone, its also again similar to film poster fonts.

I tried adding the blood effect to the type but this distracted from the illustration it also made the type harder to read.

Final Poster

However I did change the wording as it made more sense.

I also mocked up the poster.

Presentation following Studio Brief 1, going into Studio Brief 2 ...

Here is my presentation of studio brief 1. It is quite simplified as the presentation is to be around 5-7 minutes long, and I do not want to repeat myself. In this presentation I also have photographs of my publication, and I have the pdf's ready to support this. As well as this the presentation looks into the target audience of Inception, and how they where targeted by the films advertising campaign, this gives me an insight to what is successful with this particular audience. And at the end is two potential ideas to continue into studio brief 2. The first is to the subject, and quite obvious, but I would know what I was talking about as I have a lot of research. The second idea is very off course, using the name of the character Ariadne as a basis for a beauty/ skincare range. Ariadne, being a goddess in greek mythology, her name also meaning 'utterly pure' which gave me the idea of a natural beauty regime, using the idea of the maze and secrets, following from the film Inception.

Cath Kidston Print Development

I began by drawing basic elements of a tea party- from my research.
I drew different things in pencil and I then painted them with watercolours, I wanted to achieve the same effect that Cath Kidston prints have.

I hadn't used watercolours in a long time, but I managed to paint the drawing reasonably well.

I knew that I would be able to use photoshop to edit the drawings, and so I cut up the sheet I had drawn on and scanned in each drawing so that they could be edited individually.

I drew around twelve separate elements, I felt that they where all needed to get the idea of the tea party, as well as this I drew a rose and leaves to help emphasise the idea of an english garden.

Once I had scanned in all my images and edited them, I laid them out into a tile and then this could be repeated to make the pattern.

Pattern...
I felt that the pattern worked well the tea cup was the central focus, but I think that the theme was recognisable. The print also looks busy enough to be fun but not too overcrowded and chaotic.

I needed to add a background, a block colour didn't work as it was too digital against the painted illustrations.

And so I simply painted a background, I wanted the strokes to show, I felt that this would give the pattern more texture, and green was the grass.

This was the final pattern. I was happy wight he result as I wasn't really confident in my watercolours in the first place, however with the use of photoshop I had managed to make them look coherent and brighter. I also felt that the background fit in with the theme and it almost portrays grass without actually looking like grass. I also felt that the colours fit in well with the English Heritage theme, and they are not girly, and they appeal to a young female audience.

The also specified three colour ways and so I had the first (original full colour) and then I wasn't too sure how I was going to change the colours, as the colours where an important part of the theme.

However I used the layer options and changed the hue and saturation of the design this brought an interesting result.

I chose firstly to go with a red rose colour, to relict the roses of the garden, however I felt that this particular hue was too red.

This hue was too vibrant, and would not fit with the Cath Kidston brand. As well as this it would not appeal to the audience.

I finally went for this colour as I felt that it was a soft rose colours and it would appeal to the audience who aren't individual but aren't too safe either. Plus the warmth of the colour is approachable and friendly and this also suits the audience.

The other colour I chose was green, this against to represent the green of the garden. Green may appeal to the less girly demographic of the audience. It is also a different and may attract a new type of audience.
